What each message means.

Every message the extension shows links to its entry on this page.

Message 01

Your containers could not be updated

After an update, the extension converts your saved containers to the new version. This time the conversion failed, so it changed nothing: your containers, cookies and settings are exactly as they were.

What to do

  1. 01Keep using your containers; they still work.
  2. 02Export a backup from Settings › Backup & restore, so you have a copy you control.
  3. 03Report the message shown in the banner, so the next update can handle your data.

Message 02

A sign-in seems stuck in a container

The tab bounced between the same sites more than 5 times in 10 seconds. That usually means the site checks a cookie the container cannot give it, for example a cookie set on a domain the sign-in skipped.

What to do

  1. 01Choose Open normally to finish in a normal tab. That tab uses your normal browser account, not the container.
  2. 02Or choose Try again: a second attempt sometimes has the cookie it needs.
  3. 03Choose Report to send us the site name and the extension version. Nothing else is sent.

Message 03

A site does not work in containers

Some sites depend on browser features a container cannot separate. Service workers and web workers run outside the tab: a container page cannot use service workers, and storage a site opens from a worker is shared with normal tabs and other containers. Sign-ins that run outside the tab do not see the container either. The compatibility list says which sites we know about and why.

What to do

  1. 01Use that site in a normal tab.
  2. 02If you think it should work, report it on the compatibility page and we will check it on a real account.

Message 04

Close to Chrome’s rule limit

Chrome limits how many request rules an extension can set. With very many cookies across many sites, the extension simplifies its rules instead of mixing accounts: cookies for embedded content from other sites are not sent, and then cookies for one host are also sent to its subdomains. At the limit itself, the sites you used longest ago in a container are signed out there until there is room again; their cookies are kept. The extension tries the full rules again once a day.

What to do

  1. 01Close container tabs you no longer need; their rules go with them.
  2. 02Use Sign out of everything on containers you no longer use, to clear their cookies.

Message 05

Which container was this tab in?

After a restart, tabs find their container through their tab group, or through their address when only one container had a tab there. When several containers had the same page open, the extension cannot tell which tab was which, so it leaves the tab as a normal tab and asks.

What to do

  1. 01Open the popup on that tab and pick its container. The tab reloads in it.
  2. 02Choose Normal tab if it was not in a container.
  3. 03Keeping Group container tabs on avoids the question: groups survive restarts.

Message 10

A backup could not be imported

The file is not a backup from this extension, it was changed after export, or the passphrase is wrong. Nothing was changed.

What to do

  1. 01Check that you chose the file you exported, unchanged.
  2. 02Encrypted session backups need the passphrase used when exporting. It cannot be recovered.

Message 11

A licence key was not accepted

The key could not be checked with Polar, our payment provider, or Polar said it is not valid for this product.

What to do

  1. 01Copy the key again from your Polar receipt email, without spaces.
  2. 02Check that you are online for the first activation. After that, Pro works offline.
  3. 03A key can be active in a limited number of browsers. Remove it from one you no longer use, in that browser’s settings or in the Polar customer portal.
